45 Bulli FC players and supporters travelled to Newcastle on the 11th of February to take on NBN State League Heavyweights, Broadmeadow Magic.
Bulli's young youth grade side kicked off proceedings against a slick Broadmeadow Under 23's side who moved the ball around exceptionally well and took a 2-0 lead into half time. After half time John Cropper's boys showed maturity and determination beyond their tender years to work their way back into the game equalising through new recruits Daniel Severino and Jack Becker. Bulli goalkeeper Mitchell Last pulled off some heroics between the sticks when he made a fabulous penalty save. It wasn't to be enough however with Broadmeadow stealing a late goal to win the match 3-2. Jack Hobbs was very impressive in this first outing with his work rate and distribution being particular highlights. Despite the loss the youngsters should be very proud of their effort against a championship winning side and with a few more oats in their protein shakes they will definitely be looking to challenge for the title this season.
Bulli's new look first grade side looked to have a tough afternoon ahead of them when pitted against last seasons NBN State League winners, but that didn't seem to worry them as they started well, moving the ball around the home of magic football purposefully. It was no surprise when Bulli turned their dominance into a first half lead when impressive youngsters Hayden Mowbray and Brendan Patman combined to open the scoring. Bulli continued in the same vein after half time moving the ball well and creating a series of chances prior to substitue Sam Davies crossing early form the left hand side for Ben McDonald, who made no mistake in doubling the 'The I's' lead. Bulli continued to work hard as the second half progressed closing down Broadmeadow's opportunities, but the home side were rewarded for thier persistence with a consolation goal in injury time. Bulli ran out winners 2-1 on the day, with Ben Smith making the best possible to start to his time in the top job.

Bulli now travel to Ocean Park this weekend to take on the Woonona Sharks in the Charity Shield with the Ladies game kicking off at 9am, followed by Youth Grade at 11am, Reserves/Over 35's at 1pm and First Grade at 3pm. Hope to see you there!
